Wedding cake

So this was my second wedding cake ever. I love how it turned out except that from one angle the top tier looks like it's leaning...and the photo just happens to show that angle. oh well!

top two tiers were pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing, the bottom tier was chocolate/chocolate chip cake with chocolate mousse filling, and there were two extra cakes (not shown) that were White Almond Sour cream cake with lemon filling.

Cars cake

This was for a two year old who loves cars. His mom wanted a simple car cake to match the invitations.

Horse Cake

For my daughters birthday we took her and her friends on a horse drawn hay ride. She loves horses and requested a horse cake to go along with the theme. She wanted it to look like her favorite horse toy. I didn't have much time, so I used a horse mold pan instead of hand sculpting something.

Pink Baby Shower

This cake was for my sister's baby shower. She wanted something more sophisticated, so this is what I came up with. She really liked the little version of herself on top!

Farm/Pond cake

My friend, Melissa, asked for this cake for her Dad's 50th birthday. It was of his backyard pond, his tractor, and a deer. Not sure if the deer was because they have a lot in their backyard, or if it's because he likes hunting them, but either way, he liked the cake!

Safari Triplet Baby Shower

Yep! Triplets are on the way - thankfully, not for me! The baby shower theme was safari and the cake turned out pretty cute for it. I love making the little animals peeking out of the jungle leaves. This was a take off on another jungle birthday cake I did a while ago. They saw it and asked for something similar with two tiers and different colors.
The monkeys on top represented the 2 boys and girl they were having.

Curious George strikes again!

I had a request for a cake just like the one I had made previously but with more cake! I still love the simplicity of this one.

Princess Castle

This was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but I am happy with how it came out. Hopefully Allie liked it too!

Baby Shoes

A friend of mine was traveling to NY for a baby shower and asked me to make a topper for a cake she was going to buy at a bakery out there.  We thought lots of shoes for a future diva would be cute!  I’ll try to post the cake with the topper later, but at least you can see the topper itself. Everything is made of sugar except the inside of the gift box – which is Styrofoam.

Barnyard Birthday!

Avery loves cows and Cozley Zoo. So we did a barnyard cake for her 2nd birthday.  I borrowed Bella Cupcakes design for the cow since it's so darn cute! The rest I made up as I went.  Loved making this one!

Strawberry Shortcake

Obviously for a little girl who is a Strawberry Shortcake fan!  This was my first cupcake tower. I liked the impact it had with less effort too!  Strawberry and Custard, her cat are hand molded out of fondant.

Graduation Surprise

This was a cake for a graduation, but more than that, it was a surprise for the graduate. It featured her favorite things from iphone and ipod to the grand piano she loves to play.

Congratualtions Rebecca! We are so proud of you! in French and her favorite bible verses were piped along the bottom tier.

Flowers and Butterflies

This cake was for my niece who requested a birthday cake with pink, purple, and yellow flowers. She's two, but still has an opinion! :)  I loved this because it was mostly cookie cutters, which made it much easier to pull off, but also because it was such a sweet cake with the hearts, flowers and butterflies. Very girly!

Mother To Be

I got an order for a baby shower cake featuring the mother to be on top of a polka dot and flowered cake.  It was to be a copy of very familiar cakes done at the Pink Cake Box bakery. http://blog.pinkcakebox.com/baby-shower-cupcakes-2-2008-06-07.htm
It was the top tier of a cupcake tower.  The mother to be likes coffee and chocolate, so the cake was chocolate/chocolate chip and the filling was mocha buttercream with milk chocolate shavings.

Toy Story - Andy's Room

Toy Story is one of my favorite movies. So when a friend asked if I could make a cake of Andy's Room I was thrilled.  The cake turned out great! There are a lot of things I like about this cake. I used a tracing wheel from the sewing department and made stitching marks on the comforter and pillow.  So easy and so cute!  I glued craft sticks to the cake board for Andy's hardwood floor. I especially love the logo with Happy Birthday instead of Toy Story and the birthday recipient's names instead of Disney and Pixar. The toys are...well...toys! The picture doesn't do it justice, but if you click on it it should make it bigger so you can see the details.

Blue and Lime Swiss Dots

My Nephew was dedicated last week and I made his Dedication cake.  It has a cross topper I made to match, but my husband took the picture without it and I never got around to getting one with it on.  Maybe I'll ask my sister in law for one with the cross.

Star Wars Legos

Let's face it...what 7 yrs. old boy is not obsessed with Star Wars Legos?  My 7 yr. old is no different. We didn't own any of the Lego men he wanted on the cake, so I hand made them out of fondant. The Death Star on top is a Styrofoam ball covered in fondant. Light sabers are toothpicks with the points cut off and painted with lime green food coloring.

Curious George

I love Curious George and so does my daughter. This cake was so fun to make for her.  I found a coloring book page and cut out the various pieces I would need out of fondant and layered them together.  His face is such a simple line drawing that this technique worked really well.

Puppy cake

My daughter loves animals. One of her first words was dog. So when her first birthday came around, I knew I wanted to make a puppy cake. I had never made one before, but after searching online for a tutorial I was confident I could do it! I love how it turned out!

Two Peas in a Pod

I made this cake for a mother expecting twins.
I love that the little peas have rosy cheeks and crooked smiles!  They remind me of the peas from Veggie Tales.

Ladybug Cake

This was fun to make. I like the playful face of it and the leaf cake board it's sitting on. The biggest challenge in this was making the antennae so they wouldn't break when I put them in. I needed rounded shapes for this so I used metal mixing bowls to bake in!

Pink and Brown Baby cake

This was for my good friend's baby shower. I had never made a fondant bow before this. I learned a lot by making it.

Jungle Cake

Jack's mom wanted a jungle theme for his first birthday.  I liked how the palm tree turned out. This was the first time I used corn syrup mixed with a little water to make the fondant accents shiny. I love the little animals on this one! they turned out so cute!

Chocolate Swirls

Jessica's surprise birthday cake!

Baby Gifts

This was done earlier this year for a baby shower. (Obviously a boy!)  Baby shoes were made on a shoe form I made myself.  Other baby elements were made in pieces and "glued" together with royal icing later.everything is edible except the rattle handle.

Crocodile Love

Jessica loves crocodiles! I made this as a 9" 2-layer round and carved it into shape.  Fondant gave him his recognizable croc features.  The fish...well, he was just added for fun!

Beach Wedding

In May 2009 I flew to North Carolina to make my sister's wedding cake (and to enjoy the beach and wedding of course!)  I had to bring everything with me, including the baked cake, on the plane.  It all turned out well considering it went through baggage claim!

Getting to know me

Welcome to my new blog!
The purpose of my blog is to showcase my cakes and share what I've learned over the years. I am always being asked how I made different elements on my cakes or how to do the cake basics of frosting or fondant. Hopefully you not only enjoy looking at my cake creations, but also learn a little bit too!
